Alongside the three from Citizens Bank, Capital One applied to open a location in Jersey City, Trustco Bank filed to open a branch in Slingerlands, New York, First National Bank of Hughes Springs filed to set up in Marshall, Texas, and Columbia Bank applied to set up a branch in Teaneck, New Jersey.

Data from S&P Global Market Intelligence earlier this year showed a total of 1,144 national and regional banks were closed between January 1 and July 31 across 49 states - with firms pulling out of some areas at a faster rate than others.

Recent research by DailyMail.com found that New Jersey had seen the highest proportion of bank closures of any US state between January and August this year.

The latest round of bank branch closures come as increasing numbers of Americans are struggling without access to basic financial services.

An exclusive poll by DailyMail.com last month found the majority of Americans are concerned about the widespread closure of brick-and-mortar locations.

Some 51 percent of Americans are 'very concerned' or 'somewhat concerned' about the impact of dwindling outlets, which disproportionately affect poorer households, the research revealed.

According to the analysis by research agency Opinium, 10 percent of Americans with a household income less than $50,000 said they do not have a local bank branch.
